Student Visa

Milestone ImmigrationCanada has one of the best and most respected education systems in the world. Thousands of students from other countries pursue their educational goals in Canada. Studying in Canada offers great advantages. The foreign students gain valuable Canadian work experience during and after their studies. Canada also offers permanent immigration options for international students who have graduated from post-secondary programs in Canada.

You must have a study permit if your course of study is greater than 6 months. To apply for a study permit, you must
  • provide a letter of acceptance from a recognized Canadian school, college or university. Conditional letter of acceptance is also acceptable.
  • provide evidence of enough funds to live and study in Canada.
  • satisfy the immigration officials that you will leave Canada before the expiry of authorized stay.

If you have a valid study permit, you may be able to work on the campus of the institution you attend without a work permit. You can work for the institution itself, or for a private business located on the campus.

The foreign students can also work part-time off the campus during regular academic sessions (20 hours per week) and full-time during scheduled breaks, such as winter and summer holidays, and spring break. You can work in any occupation, and you can change employers whenever you like. To qualify for the program, you must have a valid study permit and be a full-time student at a recognized postsecondary educational institution. Recognized institutions generally include a public, post-secondary college or university, a CEGEP in Quebec and degree-granting programs offered by private institutions.

Since distance learning does not require the student to be in Canada, a study permit cannot be issued for this type of course.

Work permits for spouses of students

The foreign students who are a full-time student at a recognized postsecondary institution, and have a valid work permit or study permit, their spouse or common-law partner can apply for a permit to work in Canada. As long as they have a work permit, they can work in any occupation and change jobs at any time. These permits are valid for the same period of time as the foreign students study or work permit.

Post-Graduation Work Permit Program

The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program allows students who have graduated from a participating Canadian post-secondary institution to gain valuable Canadian work experience. A work permit under the program cannot be valid for a longer period than the length of the student’s studies. Following successful completion of their studies, students may accept employment in any field, with no restrictions. This means that students are allowed to apply for the work permit as soon as they graduate, and once they have it in hand, they would be able to start working as soon as they receive a job offer. There is no need for HRSDC confirmation. The work permit is valid up to a maximum of three years with no geographical restriction.

Canadian Experience Class

The new Canadian Experience Class makes it easier and more convenient for international students to apply for permanent resident status in Canada. If you have graduated from a post-secondary program at an eligible institution in Canada, and you have at least one year of work experience in Canada in a managerial, professional, technical or trade occupation after graduation, you may be eligible to apply for permanent residence in Canada.
